Dear readers, hope everything's alright! :)
I didn't plan to write but it's always a pleasure for me to share something with you.
As you know I'm a Jane Austen's fan through and through and always like to discover new facts or hear nice things abour her (I even wrote my dissertation on her in my third year of uni!). So, when I heard (see previous article) a few selected authors would re-rewrite (as many before them) new modern version of Jane Austen's novel, I was quite happy and intrigued.
Until now, the published novels 'Sense and Sensibility'by Joanna Trollope (2013) and 'Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid (2013) (also see my previous article) have been OK, I had a good time reading them. Until...I-despite the mixed reviews I read before-decided to finally let myself try to read the one based on Emma written by Alexander McCall Smith. I'm really sorry but I prefer the original! I get that's hard to do like Jane Austen and I'm not sure the authors do that in any case, as they're using their own way of writing, so no judgement on that part. :) It's just that...I tried to read but impossible to be attracted by it.
Sometimes, it feels like some passage could be shorter (not expert of course, just an impression), others could get to the point much quicker. Fortunately, I know the story quite well after reading a few years ago (five to precise), the original version and watching many adaptions. So, no worries even if I didn't really succeed to read this new modern story. But I did not finish the book. It started with a good idea but the result is let's say different. I don't know when the modern version of 'Pride&Prejudice' will be published exactly. I'll keep you posted. The author having taking the task of written it is 'Curtis Sittenfield',
To finish this article on a good note, here is a quotation from Jane Austen: 'I suppose there may be a hundred different ways of being in love' Emma (1815). From the book 'What Jane Austen would do?'
See you soon for another article! Take care, xxx
