Brontë and cinema
dear readers, well you know me by now and I often start by asking you how you are! so, how are you? And a bit of cinema today as I went to see a funny comedy named 'I give it a year'! :) really fun and fresh movie, a lot of humour, you'll have a good time and it's not too long! lol anyway, the story follows a couple who just got married and we see them through their first year of marriage! not too complicated and the perfect ending! won't tell you more but I think you'll like it! all the ingredients are there! good actors and humour à la British! :) no, it's a good movie and I had a good time watching it!
Anyway, in the Brontë's sisters, there is of course Charlotte Brontë and this time, it's about Villette, her last novel, following the story of Lucy Snowe! it's based on Charlotte Brontë's experience and life for a while at Brussels (fiction town named Villette!) I apologize, I can't tell you more as I've got trouble reading it and didn't read the entire book! you have some difficulties to identify with Lucy Snowe, she is quite secretive and like to hide the readers the truth, not really reliable! she is not a bad girl and might have some good intentions...but I don't know...well, it's my opinion! I may have not read it entirely it nonetheless seems to be a good book!
I now call, Anne Brontë! strangely and I was quite surprise actually...you'll notice that there are more books on Charlotte and Emily Brontë! it's like Anne is on their shadows, which is quite true apparently! I didn't know her quite well either before I recently discovered one of the two books she has written. And I'm thinking of reading later the other one! Only thing, Agnes Grey (the book I've read) was published at the same time with Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights! Not easy indeed! But it didn't mean anything, she is as great as her sisters, and you get a happy ending! :) the story follows Agnes Grey (same as the title) a young woman who became a governess (it's based on Anne Brontë's experience as a governess) after her father has made a bad investement and she also wants to prove her family she can do it! Agnes is a really sweet girl who only believe in the best and full of good sense, and good intentions! She will work for the two families- the Bloomfield and the Murray! But no luck at first, both families are really horrible, especially the children! the parents are completly stupid, for not saying, believing their children should be spoiled and do whatever they want! Are they crazy? it's like discipline has completly gone out and poor Agnes is left alone to deal with them as much she can! even more stupid, the parents blame her for their children's behavior! I think they have bumped their head very hard to think that when Agnes really does her best to make it work! Fortunately, at she works at the Murray's, she will meet the one that will make her heart beat very fast, Edward Weston, a nice gentleman, who notices her and loves her for who she is!! they will be a few obstacles and for a while, Agnes thinks she has lost him, fortunately, she hasn't and they get married in the end! Agnes has left the Murray's and opened a school with her mother! A really sweet and touching story! to read absolutely! (if you haven't already!) and if you're interested as well: another book by Anne Brontë 'The tenant of Wildfell Hall'! All that makes me of course thinking about Haworth, town where the Brontë's lived and which I went 3 years ago, with a really good friend, (whom I also miss!) you don't forget it! you can see where they got their inspirations! good memories once again! :)
And in the same circle of women's writers, who was also a really good friend of Charlotte Brontë, I name Elisabeth Gaskell! she has written many books including 'Wives and daughters'(haven't read it), 'North and South'(which I've read...a few years back...3 maybe...and it's really great! you should read it! I enjoyed it! there has been a Tv adaptations made, it's nice but sorry once again, the book is better! :) the book I wanted to talk you about is called 'Ruth', a sweet and touching story, I promise you you'll cry in the end! I was sad and couldn't believe it! Anyway, first..a (short) pitch! Ruth is young girl (she is 16 at the beginning of the story) She has no family, a part for a absent guardian who doesn't seem to care much about her. She is first working as seamstress. As the story takes place, she catches the eyes of a gentleman Mr Henry Bellingham. Captivated by her, when Ruth loses her job and home, he offers her his help, their love story begins. she is offered an another chance and she has someone to love! Unfortunately, the horrible man deserts her cruelly! (Men!) Ruth is therefore left alone! Nonetheless, she is offered a second chance as she meets the Bensons, brother and sister leaving together, who will not only help her, but offer her love and friendship! Only thing, soon after Bellingham's desertion, Ruth discovers she's pregnant! Nine Months later she has a lovely boy names Leonard! :) it's hard at first but as the years pass, Ruth becomes a strong and lovely woman! She will of course meet Bellingham again! And comes the questions of 'social acceptances and personal pride' as he had abandonned her! with no particular reasons! Many other events happen, maybe I won't tell you everything, it will be nice that you have some elements of surprise, no? the only thing I might tell you is that Ruth seems at first naive and completly lost (you sometimes wants to shake her a bit, but you then realize that she is quite young and has not mother or father to guide her, she has the tendency of relying on people a lot, until she has her child and got older! the transition is well written! As the previous statement I made (the crying part), it's stupid but I couldn't believe the end, after all she has been through, raising her child, findind work as a governess with actually nice children before her secret got out and loses her job! Not nice people! she was young and influencable! Ruth knows what she has done, she is aware of it! I just find it harsh to cast her out like that! society at the time was very judgemental! But after the scandal and the years have passed once again, Ruth becomes a nurse! sweet thing, she is really appreciated by the people she helps! There you go...lol, I find myself telling you the all story! (most of it) never mind, you'll still enjoy reading it! to come back to the end of that touching and poignant story...I was really surprised and was expecting something else! I get it's the author choice, it's not illogic but it's still sad! well, hope you'll still want to know more! Despite that, it's worth reading! :) I was glad to have discovered it! :) Anyway, it's all for today! It was nice to share it with you! I apologize in advance for any mistakes or mispelling, it's late and my eyes are closing themselves! hope it won't be too hard to read! However, it should mostly be OK, I think! take care and see you soon for another article, though I'm going to write maybe less as the months come, stress and all...well, you know me by now (smile discreet)! :) xxx
